This paper is concerned with an approach for integrating assessment of similarity into a framework of problem solving that embodies central notions of problem solving like goals, knowledge and learning. We review empirical ndings that unravel characteristics of similarity assessment most of which have not been covered by purely syntactic models of similarity. A formal account of similarity assessment that allows for the integration of central ideas of problem solving is developed. Given a goal and a domain theory, an appropriate perspective is taken that brings into focus only goal-relevant features of a problem description as input to similarity assessment.

Linking Gene Ontology-Driven Similarity and Gene Co-Expression in Mouse
The integration of multiple sources of information is becoming prevalent in post-genome biology. An important task toward that goal is the quantitative assessment of relationships between relevant predictive resources. Here we assess key associations between the functional similarity of pairs of gene products and their expression correlation. Two approaches to computing similarity among genes b...
متن کاملA novel method for detecting structural damage based on data-driven and similarity-based techniques under environmental and operational changes
The applications of time series modeling and statistical similarity methods to structural health monitoring (SHM) provide promising and capable approaches to structural damage detection. The main aim of this article is to propose an efficient univariate similarity method named as Kullback similarity (KS) for identifying the location of damage and estimating the level of damage severity. An impr...
متن کاملOntology-driven similarity approaches to supporting gene func- tional assessment
Motivation: Bio-ontologies, such as the Gene Ontology, represent important sources of prior knowledge that may be automatically integrated to support predictive data analysis tasks. The assessment of similarity of gene products provides the basis for the implementation of classification tools and the automated validation of functional associations. This study discusses alternative techniques fo...
متن کاملBottom-up and top-down control in visual search.
Previous research suggests that the allocation of attention is largely controlled either in a stimulus-driven or in a goal-driven manner. To date, few studies have systematically manipulated variables affecting stimulus-driven and goal-driven selection independently in order to investigate how both manners of control interrelate and affect performance in visual search. In the present study obse...
متن کاملModal similarity
Just as Boolean rules define Boolean categories, the Boolean operators define higher-order Boolean categories referred to as modal categories. We examine the similarity order between these categories and the standard category of logical identity (i.e. the modal category defined by the biconditional or equivalence operator). Our goal is 4-fold: first, to introduce a similarity measure for determ...
